HEARING MAILING LIST

We are aware that the switch from in-person hearings to the use of Webex has had a huge impact on the personal and professional development of junior lawyers. In discussions with members our concerns were confirmed - that trainees and NQs are not getting as much exposure to oral court advocacy as they otherwise would have. In response to this the SYLA have been in discussions with the Sheriff Principal at Edinburgh to create a pilot project, allowing junior lawyers to observe procedural hearings, even when they and their firm has no involvement.

The result has been a new mailing list, separate to the newsletters you already receive from SYLA, which will provide links to procedural business in Edinburgh Sheriff Court, including ASPIC and Ordinary business.

This is currently a pilot, and will be monitored to review its effectiveness. From week commencing 11 April those signed up to the scheme will receive regular emails with links to Webex hearings. The emails will contain "rules" for participation, including not sharing the link and remaining muted with your camera off at all times during the hearing.

We hope this project will go some way toward providing more advocacy experience for junior lawyers and we welcome feedback as the project progresses in order that we can continue to improve.

To sign up to this list please email [email protected] from your work email address where you will be sent a link to sign up.
