As an incentive we offered free internet access, free coffee and cake and free entry into a prize draw. (Free stuff all made possible by the kind sponsorship of MLP Private Finance.) June 2006: Legal Profession and Legal Aid (Scotland) Bill

May 2006: We had a ball!
The EYBA/SYLA Gala Dinner event on Friday 21st April was an absolute ball – as featured in the FIRM Magazine! Around 250 young lawyers and friends including some of our European colleagues partied the night away at the Roxburghe Hotel in Edinburgh and, for the hardcore element, later in the Opal Lounge. Haggis, whisky, very energetic ceilidh dancing, Englishmen in kilts and Estonian national dress – to name just a few things that all helped to make it a great night.

Law Awards

SYLA were lucky enough to be invited along to the Law Award of Scotland on 1 September 2005 by one our sponsors, MLP Private Finance. It was a great night, hosted by the superbly sarcy Donald Findlay. SYLA President Richard Pugh was unfortunately pipped at the post for the Young Lawyer of the Year award but better luck next year Richard! The award went to the very deserving Hazel Elaine Moffat from Shepherd & Wedderburn and the winner of Trainee of the Year was Katie Russell from Shepherd & Wedderburn.

Hmmm… there’s a bit of a Shepherd & Wedderburn theme here! Obviously it’s a lucky place to work!

June 2005

ISRCL Conference Young Lawyers Afternoon
SYLA have been asked to assist the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law and Crown Office in organising a young lawyers’ afternoon within the ISRCL Conference, which is being held in Edinburgh in the week beginning 27 June.

The conference is being attended by members of the legal profession, both from this country and abroad. This high profile event is being organised by the Lord Advocate, the Crown Agent, several High Court Judges and Sheriffs.

The idea behind it is to create a forum for discussing areas of criminal law on an international basis, and to consider issues for reform.

As part of the Conference there’s going to be a Young Lawyers’ Afternoon on 29th June 2005. This is a chance for younger members of the profession to attend the conference and participate in the discussion forums etc. There is a special rate to attend only this part of the conference, rather than having to pay a small fortune to attend the whole thing! In fact, this day only costs £30 and it will provide much welcome CPD time! Click here for a copy of the draft programme, including an invite to the evening event.

If you’re interested in attending the Young Lawyers’ Day and/or evening event, contact Sineidin Corrins [Sineidin.Corrins@copfs.gsi.gov.uk], at the Crown office.

Red Nose Day Skool Disco
Are you nostalgic for those days when the girls wore ties and pigtails and the boys wore shorts and blazers and you got paid pocket money and you got to go home at 3pm to watch cartoons and you didn’t even know what law was? Well all is not lost – dust off your old school uniform and come along to our “Skool Disco” event on Friday 11 March 2005 in Edinburgh. It’s only £5 for a ticket and all profits will go to Comic Relief! Click here for more details and info on getting tickets. It’s open to all young lawyers – and bring all your mates too!

The best legal conference ever – the SYLA’s Trainee and NQ Weekend!
Thanks for everyone who attended, spoke at or helped organise the SYLA’s “Trainee & NQ Weekend” conference (previously the “Traineeship Weekend”) which was held from 25-27 February 2005 at The MacDonald Inchyra Hotel, Polmont. We hope you all enjoyed it and hope to see you again very soon! It was also great to get so many new committee members – it’s always great to have new people with new ideas on board. We’ll be posting a full report on the Weekend in our Events section shortly, just as soon as we’ve recovered!
